Michael Oliver refereed our heavy home defeat against Everton on Boxing Day. It was his first Burnley game this season but we haven’t had too long to wait for the next one with him in charge tomorrow at Watford.

He refereed this particular fixture two seasons ago and he was very much the centre of attention in the early stages of the game. He yellow carded Watford’s M’Baye Niang in the first couple of minutes and it could so easily have been a red. Four minutes later he did get his red card out, dismissing Jeff Hendrick, a decision over which we could have no complaints. However, when Niang scored their second at the end of the first half, his celebration of the goal demanded the mandatory yellow card. That would have seen him go off but Oliver kept his cards in his pocket.

I don’t think we can have too many issues with his handling of the Everton game although the penalty might not have been given by another referee.

This season, he’s refereed 21 domestic games in which there have been 61 yellow cards, 28 of them to home team players and 33 to away team players. He’s sent off five players, the last of them in his last game a week ago.

That was the game between Leicester and Southampton which Southampton won 2-1. He sent off Saints’ Yan Valery for a second yellow card and there were three other yellows, to Leicester’s Ben Chilwell and James Maddison along with Jack Stephens of Southampton.

The assistant referees tomorrow are Stuart Burt and Simon Bennett. The fourth official is Football League referee Tim Robinson whose only Burnley game was our 2-0 home win against Rotherham almost three years ago when he had an appalling afternoon.
