Saints again on opening day
For the second successive season we’ve been paired with Southampton on the opening day of the season and it is a season that will also come to an end at home with the visit of another south coast Brighton and Hove Albion.
That opening fixture is currently scheduled for Saturday 10th August with the curtain to come down on Sunday 17th May, one week later than the 2018/19 season ended.
The away games get underway a week after the Southampton game with a trip to Arsenal while we have to wait until 28th September to pay a visit to one of the promoted clubs with our game at Villa Park against Aston Villa. We travel to Sheffield United on 2nd November with the final away game of the season at Norwich on 9th May.
The Christmas and New Year fixtures give us one away home game and two home games. We are at Everton on Boxing Day this year while 2020 will be brought in with a home game against Aston Villa. Between those two fixtures we will face Manchester United at home.
There are only two fixtures scheduled for midweek in 2019/20; Manchester City will be at the Turf on 3rd December with our trip to Manchester United once again in midweek, this one on Tuesday 21st January.
One game doesn’t have a confirmed date as yet, even before television starts moving things around. The game at St. Mary’s against Southampton will be played on Saturday 8th or 15th February. These are the two weekends scheduled for the winter break with five games to be played on each weekend.
Writing this article a year ago, I referred to the tough end to the season. This season we will only have one game against a top six club in our last seven fixtures and that’s our game against Liverpool at Anfield on 25th April.
All dates are provisional with the television fixtures for the early season set to be announced in July.
