Bobby Madley will referee the Clarets for the second time this season tomorrow when he takes charge of our game at Sunderland; his previous game having been the game at West Ham in December.

The West Ham game was Madley’s seventh Burnley game although the first in the Premier League having missed out on refereeing us two seasons ago.

He’s a referee who has caused us some problems in past seasons. The sending off of Kieran Trippier for supposedly handing the ball on the line in the 2012/13 home game against Charlton was just wrong and in the following season, in a tight League Cup game against West Ham he awarded a penalty against Jason Shackell that, if you were being kind to him, you would describe as soft.

On the other side of the coin, just a few months later he upset Steve McClaren and Derby when he dismissed Chris Martin for diving. I still don’t think Martin was fouled but neither do I think he dived.

In this season’s game, West Ham won it 1-0 via a Mark Noble goal in stoppage time at the end of the first half. He scored when his penalty was saved by Tom Heaton, hitting home the rebound. Sean Dyche was unhappy that a free kick hadn’t been given for a foul on Tom Heaton prior to the penalty.

That game was one of 26 he’s refereed this season with 21 in the Premier League, three in the cups and two Football League games at Southend and Brighton. In those games he’s given 107 yellow and three red cards.

More recently it has been the home players getting yellow cards. Back in December there had been more away team players getting them but that’s changed significantly with his totals now 52 to home team players and 55 to away team players. Only one of the red cards has come in the Premier League; that was Watford’s Miguel Britos at the end of their 1-0 home defeat against Stoke in November.

His last game was Bournemouth’s 3-2 home win against West Ham last week in which there were six yellow card. Bournemouth had all of Steve Cook, Dan Gosling, Marc Pugh and Benik Afobe carded along with West Ham’s Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble.

Bobby Madley is currently 12th in RATE THE REF with a rating of 62.90 out of 100.

The assistant referees are Peter Kirkup (Northamptonshire) and Marc Perry (West Midlands). The fourth official is Mike Jones (Chester) who has refereed four Burnley games this season, the most recent being the FA Cup replay win against Sunderland.
