Paul Tierney from Wigan will referee our game tomorrow against Southampton; it is his second Burnley game this season having previously refereed our home draw against Hull back in September.

Since that Hull game he’s dropped to the bottom of RATE THE REF and now has as rating of just 53.39 out of 100. He had a nightmare afternoon and it’s not the first shocking game he’s had refereeing. In four games there have now been two with his handling of the cup tie at Barnsley in January 2013 another dreadful performance.

The Burnley v Hull game was his first Premier League game of the season and he’s gone on to referee four more since in a total of 18 games refereed which have brought 67 yellow cards and two red cards.  Of the yellow cards, 32 have gone to home team players and 25 to away team players. The two players he sent off were both away team players. The first was former Claret Alex MacDonald in Oxford’s 0-0 draw at Swindon and more recently he sent off Kalvin Phillips of Leeds in a 2-0 defeat at Brighton.

He came in for some criticism over the festive period. Rafa Benitez was far from happy with the way he let Sheffield Wednesday get away with constant fouling as they beat Newcastle 1-0 at St. James’ Park. Tierney yellow carded six Wednesday players in that game in which he awarded 23 free kicks to Newcastle.

He got a blasting from Sam Allardyce after his next game in which he seemed to deny Crystal Palace two blatant penalties against Swansea, the first for a foul by Swans’ goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and the second for a foul.

He’s refereed just once since and that was in last week’s FA Cup clash between Liverpool and Plymouth. There were no cards in that game.

The assistant referees are Andy Garratt and Matthew Wilkes (both West Midlands). The fourth official is Michael Oliver (Northumberland) whose last Burnley game was the 4-1 home win against Derby in January last year.
