Paul Tierney, from Wigan, was promoted to the select group of referees in the summer and tomorrow will see him referee in the Premier League for the first time this season although he has refereed in the top flight previously.

His first Premier League game was just over two years ago. In August 2014 he was in charge of Swansea’s home game against West Brom but it was a year before he got his second game and again West Brom were involved, this time at Watford.

Tomorrow will be just his sixth Premier League game after kicking off this season with a League Two game, followed by two in the Championship and a Football League Trophy game. There were no cards in the first of those four games but he’s handed out 14 in the other three, all yellow, with five going to home team players and nine to away team players.

It will be just his fourth Burnley game. His first came at Burnley in the FA Cup in January 2013 when he played as big a part as anyone in us going out of the competition. It’s fair to say he had a nightmare which included mistaking Michael Duff and Brian Stock and yellow carding Stock, the wrong player, in an incident. Soon after, he gave Stock a second yellow and we played over half of the game with ten men.

In the following season he refereed our 2-0 League Cup win against Preston and in December last year was in the middle for our 4-0 home win against Charlton, his first Burnley league game. He’s certainly improved match by match but stands next to bottom in RATE THE REF with a rating of 56.02 out of 100. He has the lowest match rating among the select group referees for both consistency and control & authority, both in the Barnsley game.

His overall performances have improved, clearly, and that has been rewarded with this place on the select group and he now gets his first Premier League game as a professional referee.

The assistant referees are Simon Beck (Bedfordshire) and Ian Hussin (Merseyside). The fourth official is Michael Oliver (Northumberland) who last refereed Burnley
