At last week’s Lancashire Senior Cup Final against Blackburn Rovers, there was an unfamiliar name among the names of Burnley substitutes, that of Joel Senior.

1819 burnley joel senior 01It was a case of straight to Google and we found two options; one was a Jamaican playing for Harbour View and the other a right-back whose current club is Curzon Ashton, where Burnley play some of their home games. It was the latter and today we’ve announced his signing on an initial one year deal with a further year’s option.

The 19-year-old Senior started in the academy with Oldham but dropped into non-league with Maine Road and FC United of Manchester where he won the manager’s player of the year award in 2017/18 after a string of impressive performances. He moved to Curzon Ashton only in February and I’m sure the connection between our two clubs has helped secure this move for him.

After signing his deal, Senior told the club’s website: “I’m delighted. It’s been a long time coming. I’ve been working hard for it for the last three or four years and it’s finally happened. Burnley have put their trust in me, and I’m delighted to be here. A lot of people’s routes have been different and mine has been to come up through men’s football with some good clubs. I’ve finally found Burnley and I’m delighted to be here.”

He added: “It’s everything a player could want here and perfect for me to fulfil my potential. Compared to where I’ve been it’s completely different, but it’s what I need to develop my game and become the player I want to be. I want to come in for pre-season fully fit and be ready to get into the under-23s team and who knows where you can go from there? I’ve got to work hard and that starts now. Let’s see where it takes me.”

He will compete for that right-back berth with Jordan Cropper although the club have suggested that he is likely to be one of the players loaned out next season at some point. Burnley have also confirmed that Curzon Ashton will again be home to our under-23s next season.
