Last Saturday saw our winning run come to an end in the U18 Professional Development League and that allowed Sheffield Wednesday to move above us into first place in the northern group table.

1718 burnley bobby thomas 00 500x500We led 1-0 in our game at Watford with a Michael Fowler header; the new captain has scored in all four games this season. Following Watford’s equaliser, Kian Yari scored to restore the advantage but then we fell away and trailed 5-2 before Bobby Thomas (pictured) scored a consolation goal.

That opened the door for Sheffield Wednesday and they took advantage on a day when the results, generally, went in favour of the southern teams. Wednesday had a resounding 5-0 win at Crystal Palace to move a point clear of us while Nottingham Forest were the only other northern winners. They too hit five, beating Colchester, who are still to register their first point, 5-2 and they’ve now drawn level with us on points and moved ahead of us on goal difference.

Sheffield United gained a point from a goalless draw at Coventry but the other seven went in favour of the southern teams with Cardiff now leading the way in that group with four wins out of four. They beat Hull, who like Colchester, are still searching for their first point of the season.

Wednesday, Forest and Watford might have led the way in terms of goals, all of them scoring five, but two other teams hit four. Millwall beat Birmingham 4-0 and QPR were 4-1 winners against Bolton.

There are eight fixtures this weekend, one later today and the other seven on Saturday. This time they all feature northern group teams at home against southern group teams.
