Short trip to Wigan for youth team
A week ago our under-18s travelled to Watford where we were beaten 3-1 in the last of the early season games against teams from the north group of the U18 Professional Development League and tomorrow the main group of games against the teams in our own league kick off with a trip to Wigan.
They are in the same position as we were two years ago, enjoying their first season in this league, having secured Category 2 status, and they’ve started the season well with two wins, two draws and just the one defeat from their first five games. They currently sit second in the north group, behind Sheffield Wednesday on goal difference having been top of the league a week earlier. We can probably expect goals too tomorrow. In their five games to date there have been 26 goals; they’ve scored 14 and conceded 12.
Having started our season with two defeats against Millwall and Bristol City, we then went top of the league with two 2-1 wins against Cardiff and Crystal Palace. Last week we were in front at Watford until falling to a 3-1 defeat with the home side scoring three late goals. We’ve conceded two less goals than Wigan but have struggled to find the net with only five goals so far and Mitch George (pictured) currently the leading goalscorer with two goals, one in each of the wins.
Three of Tony Philliskirk’s players were involved in yesterday’s Lancashire Senior Cup penalty shoot out win against Fleetwood and there’s an under-23 game in three days time which means he’s likely to be without some of his players again tomorrow which could see some of our younger players involved.
With Wigan newly promoted to this league, it’s three seasons since we last played them and that was in the Youth Alliance League when Michael Duff was enjoying his one season in charge at that level. Our away game against them that season ended in a 4-3 win with our goals scored by Tinashe Chakwana, Tunde Bayode, Tommy Wood and Tyler Shrimpton.Share this page :
