1516 burnley andy nugent 00 630x420Josh Dolling and Andy Nugent were playing for Burnley’s youth team last season; we have to go back sixteen years to remember Ross Preston playing but all three have recently joined non-league teams.

Dolling and Nugent (pictured) both enjoyed short youth loans last season at Trafford and Prescot Cables respectively and both have now joined Cables. They were scholars at Burnley throughout the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons but neither were offered a third year at the end of last season.

Preston signed as an apprentice in 2003 having previously been with Leeds. Many thought he had a bright future with the club but, at 16, he struggled with homesickness. Manager Stan Ternent was brilliant with him and allowed him to return to his native North East to his Newcastle supporting dad and Sunderland supporting mum when he needed to, but after just a short time with the club he found it too difficult and returned home on a permanent basis.

He’s played in non-league football ever since and was recently transferred from Washington to Sunderland RCA. He was in the side that were beaten 3-1 yesterday by Northern League leaders North Shields.
