Under-18 pre-season ends with Padiham win
In terms of results, the youth team’s pre-season has been a good one with a draw against Fleetwood at Gawthorpe followed by victories against Harrogate Town, Stoke City, Armthorpe Welfare and finally at Padiham last night with a 3-0 win.
It was a tricky game for the young Clarets. We kicked off with just five second year scholars in the line up, five first years and a trialist. That was a very young team to line up against a much more experienced adult team.
All the highlights for the Clarets, in terms of goals, came early and late in the game. We were 2-0 after just six minutes. The trialist, who had scored at Armthorpe, got the first with captain Michael Fowler (pictured) adding the second with an outstanding solo goal, working his way past defenders into the box before hitting an excellent strike past the helpless goalkeeper.
It might have looked as though we were going to have an easy ninety minutes at that point but it was anything but and we had to defend well at times along with benefiting from a bit of good fortune, to retain the lead.
It remained at 2-0 until the 88th minute. A ball up the pitch found Fowler almost on the left touchline. He won a header and then moved inside to receive a return pass. When he did, he unleashed a spectacular shot from the edge of the box into the roof of the net.
We can now look forward to the U18 Professional Development League which starts a week on Saturday. The fixtures are still to be released but it’s understood that Charlton will be the visitors on the opening day although that remains subject to change.
The team last night was: Harry Allen, Kane Patterson, Udoka Chimna, Richard Taylor, Matthew Rain, Rhys Fenlon (Chris Conn-Clarke 75), Ethan Kershaw, Kian Yari, Trialist (Mitchell George 80), Terry Mupariwa (Dan Moss 70), Michael Fowler.Share this page :
