It’s the home of the England squads but today our under-18s will take on Bournemouth in a pre-season friendly at the training base in Burton-on-Trent.

1819 burnley tony philliskirk 01 500x500As is always the case, it will be a new look squad for Tony Philliskirk this season with the new scholars arriving with one of the new recruits, Ben Woods, having gone with the under-23s to Poland along with four of the second year scholars.

Philliskirk said: “Obviously we are a bit low on usual numbers with lads away in Poland with the under-23s. We have a couple of trialists that will also be playing a part and then a couple of under-16s as well to make up the travelling contingent.”

Like the first team and under-23s, they’ve been back in training since a week last Monday and they too have had their tough day as Philliskirk explained. “First of all, I have to be very praise worthy of the lads, their attitude and application this week has been excellent.

“We had our gaffer’s day on Tuesday, which was brutal, and it is a really tough test for all the lads. It is a great test, not just physically but mentally as well. There wasn’t a single moan throughout the whole day and the lads application towards the day, and the week since coming back, has been great.”

He added: “They are all looking forward to their first game down at St. George’s Park against Bournemouth on Saturday. Every player will get 45 minutes each, and two different 11s in each half will be the plan.”

Kick off is 12 noon today.
