Having beaten Sheffield United last Monday at Curzon Ashton, the under-23s are on their travels this afternoon with an away game against Sheffield Wednesday.

1819 burnley ben gibson signs 2 500x500We go into the game in fifth place in the Professional Development League table; Sheffield Wednesday are one place and one point behind us. We’ve won five of our ten games; Wednesday have won one less but also lost one less than us.

In recent weeks we’ve seen both Steven Defour and Robbie Brady feature in the under-23 team. Both played twice as they prepared for a return to the first team. Neither will be involved today, of course, having both played ninety minutes yesterday, but Ben Gibson is expected to feature again having made his return from injury in last week’s win.

Today’s fixture is at their Middlewood Road training ground but last season the game was a crucial one for both teams in terms of the league table and was moved to Hillsborough. It was the final game of the season for both teams. Sheffield Wednesday needed a point to win the northern group while we needed a win to avoid finishing bottom in our first season in the league.

We fell behind very early in the game but by half time had turned things round with Rob Harker and Tinashe Chakwana both scoring. Chakwana had also seen a goal disallowed and he failed to score from the penalty spot in the second half as Wednesday became the second best. The 2-1 win took us above Barnsley into ninth place with Wednesday finishing third and out of the play-offs.

The teams were;

Sheffield Wednesday:  Dan Wallis, Ciaran Brennan, Joe West, Jack Lee, Connor O’Grady, Liam Waldock, Liam Williams, Jack Stobbs, Connor Kirby, Preslav Borukov, Fraser Preston. Subs: Joshua Render, Jordan Lonchar, Alex Hunt, Ben Hughes, Jordan O’Brien.

Burnley: Conor Mitchell, Jordan Cropper, Jordan Clarke, Oliver Younger, Scott Wilson, Ali Koiki, Josh Benson, Mace Goodridge (Teddy Perkins 88), Christian N’Guessan, Tinashe Chakwana, Rob Harker (Ntumba Massanka 78). Subs not used: Connor King. Trialist.

Today’s game kicks off at 1 p.m.
