stocksbridge 1000x500Steve Stone’s under-23s are in action this afternoon for the last time in 2018 with a trip into Yorkshire to play Sheffield United at Stocksbridge Park Steels.

We go into the game in third place in the northern group while our opponents are currently three places and four points behind us although they do have a game in hand.  They’ve had a difficult run recently after a good start to the season. They’ve picked up just two points from four games since we beat them 6-0 in the home game back in October while our record since is three wins, two draws and one defeat although we haven’t won any of our last three league games since beating Nottingham Forest four weeks ago.

We’ve drawn at both Birmingham and Crewe, either side of the Premier League Cup draw at West Brom, and we were beaten heavily six days ago by Leeds in the behind closed doors game at Gawthorpe.

This fixture last season ended in a 1-0 defeat at the same venue, played on Good Friday, 30th March in a game that saw Jonathan Walters make a return from injury. Our team that afternoon was: Conor Mitchell, Jordan Cropper (Arlen Birch 79), Teddy Perkins, Oliver Younger, Ali Koiki, Tunde Bayode, Mace Goodridge, Rahis Nabi, Dwight McNeil, Tinashe Chakwana (Ntumba Massanka 68), Jon Walters. Subs not used: Aidan Stone, Christian N’Guessan, Brad Jackson.

It would take a freak set of results today but it is possible for us to go back to the top for Christmas although we could also drop to fifth should we be beaten with both Bolton and Crewe just a point behind us.

Kick off at Stocksbridge is 2 p.m.
