Nottingham Forest and Burnley kicked off last weekend’s U18 Professional Development League games in second and third places and just a point behind leaders Sheffield Wednesday, but defeats for both of us in Sheffield have seen Wednesday go four points clear at the top of the league.

1718 burnley bobby thomas 00 500x500While we were beaten 1-0 at Sheffield United, the top two were coming face to face elsewhere in the Steel City and it was Wednesday who came out on top in another 1-0 result. That’s taken them to 16 points with Forest still above us on goal difference although we’ve both now dropped a place with Leeds beating Bolton to equal our points total with a much better goal difference than both of us and they have a game in hand.

At this early stage of the season, when some teams have played two games more than others, the table needs time to settle down, more so given that until this last set of fixtures the games have all been against teams from the opposite group. Having said that, the top four will remain the top four this time next week given the lead over fifth, Sheffield United with two games in hand, is currently five points.

In the south group, Cardiff still lead the table although they lost their 100% record with a 1-0 defeat at Bristol City. They’ve still a game in hand but now lead the table only on goal difference from Ipswich who had an astonishing 6-3 win at Charlton. Cardiff’s goal difference isn’t bad though; the goal they conceded in that 1-0 defeat was only the second all season and they’d scored 11 times in their previous three games.

There is another full fixture list this Saturday with Burnley back at home against Barnsley. We’ve won all of our three home games this season.
