Both Wigan and Wrexham were involved in draws last Saturday in the Youth Alliance League, giving both teams their first points of the season and leaving just Morecambe and Fleetwood still waiting for their first point.

Last season’s champions Wigan had made a disappointing start to the season with three successive league defeats but they earned a point from a 0-0 draw at Rochdale while Wrexham claimed their opening point of the season in a 3-3 draw at Blackpool.

Morecambe, meanwhile, lost for a third time at Port Vale and Fleetwood were beaten 2-1 at Bury with the Shakers returning to the top of the league after Carlisle had taken top spot temporarily with a 1-0 home win against Tranmere on the previous day.

Carlisle have had a difficult time in recent seasons but are right up there with three wins to follow the opening day draw at Preston. They look good defensively and  they are still to concede a goal although they have netted just five goals.

They trail Bury by two points, with Port Vale in third place but Bury and Carlisle are just two of seven teams currently unbeaten. Rochdale and Burnley both have eight points from two wins and two draws while the three teams who started the season late all remain unbeaten. Accrington have won both their league games, Blackpool have a win and a draw with Shrewsbury now having drawn both their opening games.

It’s certainly a better start to the season for Burnley; a year ago we had to wait until a win at Preston on 21st November to reach the eight point total we now have.

We are back to cup action this week with all the teams from the North West and North East leagues playing their second of three games in the group stage of the Youth Alliance Cup. Having won at Accrington last week, we travel to Doncaster who themselves were beaten against Scunthorpe in the first game.

All the league results from last week are below and they are followed by this week’s cup fixtures, Burnley’s goalscorers and the current league table.
