When Nashé Chakwana scored a late winner for Burnley last Saturday in the Youth Alliance Cup, I’d assumed, wrongly, that we had finished second in Group 4 behind Accrington Stanley.

That’s not the case, Stanley had beaten Doncaster on the previous day and both of us have finished with two wins and a defeat, both of us scoring three times and conceding twice. The position was then decided on the result between the two teams and that was a 1-0 win for Burnley with Scott Wilson (pictured) having scored the goal. That was our first game in the competition, played on the last day of August.

The Football League haven’t published rules for the competition so it is not clear, as yet, who will go through, but Burnley are certainly in the next round and I suspect Accrington might also. Scunthorpe, who only needed a draw to finish above us, are now in third place.

Rochdale, Burton, Hartlepool, Burnley, Morecambe and Port Vale are definite group winners with Wigan looking virtually certain to win the seventh group although they will have to wait until Wednesday when Fleetwood play host to Tranmere. It would take a big Tranmere win to pass Wigan.

Although it is now back to league action, there is no game for the Clarets this week with our next fixture at home against Blackpool on 5th November.

The big game this weekend is that between Bury and Walsall who are separated by one point and Accrington in the table. Walsall and Accrington, the latter having a game in hand, have 19 points with Bury on 18. A draw in that game would leave currently unbeaten Accrington needing a win at Preston, who are still to win a league game, to go top.

The likelihood is that Burnley will drop one place in the table. The only two teams able to pass us are Carlisle and Rochdale who are one and two points behind us respectively. They play each other on Friday. If either side wins, they will pass us, a draw would see us retain sixth place.

All last week’s cup results are below as are this week’s cup fixture and the league programme for the weekend. There’s Burnley’s goalscorers followed by both the league table and the cup groups.
