A first Burnley league game for referee Jones
Robert Jones has twice previously refereed Burnley but both have been in cup competitions. The first came two seasons ago at Burton in the League Cup and last season he took charge of our FA Cup tie at home against Peterborough.
My first memory of Jones was at Deepdale for a pre-season friendly against Preston which somehow he managed to make a mess of. He wasn’t much better at Burton either although the Peterborough game last season gave us the opportunity to see why he’s progressed so quickly; he had an excellent game when he must have been as frustrated as we all were at the numerous and unnecessary VAR delays.
With two more Premier League games added this season, tomorrow will be his fourth at top level. It will also be just his seventh game all season with a further two in the Championship and two in the League Cup. In his six games to date there have been just eleven yellow cards. Seven of those cards have gone to home team players with four to away team players. There have been no red cards; there weren’t any last season either and we have to go back to April 2019 when he last sent off a player and that was Preston’s Ben Pearson against tomorrow’s opponents Leeds.
His most recent game was Brentford’s League Cup win against Newcastle four days ago. The one player yellow carded in that game was Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey.
Fourth official tomorrow is Craig Pawson who refereed our last away game, the 0-0 draw at Aston Villa. Michael Oliver will be on VAR duty; his last Burnley game as referee was the home defeat against Spurs in October.
