It’s matchday for the under-21s today with a first ever visit to Fleetwood in the Professional Development League.

Ahead of kick off, we are sixth in the league while our opponents are two placed higher in fourth place. They have eight points more than us but we do have three games in hand.

With fourteen games played, it leaves us just days from March with over half of our league games still to play and we are still also in both the Central League Cup and the Lancashire Senior Cup. Hull, who are currently next to bottom, have played the same number of games as us but everyone else has played anything between two and seven more games.

We can’t move up with a win today. Barnsley are the closest of the teams above us with 28 points, six more than us but we need to keep an eye on both Coventry and Wigan in the two places below us.

This is Fleetwood’s first season in the Professional Development League and they’ve done well to win nine of their seventeen games so far. They are unbeaten in their last four games, beating both Coventry and third place Sheffield Wednesday and drawing against both of the top two Birmingham and Sheffield United.

We beat Peterborough 4-0 last time out but were beaten at Sheffield Wednesday in our last away game two weeks ago, our only league defeat since mid-October.

The home game against them ended in a 1-1 draw at Gawthorpe. Tom Tweedy (pictured) gave us the lead with Fleetwood levelling with a goal from Finlay Armstrong who was a member of our under-21 team last season before opting for a move there.

Today’s game is being played at Poolfoot Farm, Fleetwood’s training ground, and kicks off at 1 p.m.
