Burnley’s Premier League game against Spurs tomorrow at White Hart Lane will be refereed by Kevin Friend, his first Burnley game since the 1-0 win at Preston last April.

It’s as far back as the 2004/05 season since he first refereed us in a 1-0 home defeat against West Ham and tomorrow will be his 16th Burnley game, the most recent six of which have come in the last two seasons.

Generally we haven’t had too many problems with him, not since a run of three away games over nine years ago. The first of those poor games was at Wolves during the 18 game run without a win while the next two were at Watford and QPR in the following season. We won both those games despite his performances.

There haven’t been many complaints since, other than the two penalty shouts at Leeds on the opening day of last season, although he did leave one manager unhappy on a visit to Turf Moor in 2010. Friend refereed both our games against Preston last season but it was his performance in our 4-3 win against them in the 2010/11 season that saw upset Ferguson who seemed to think he’d given him a straight red rather than a second yellow card for time wasting, claiming he’d never seen a player sent off like that previously.

Friend first refereed in the Premier League back in 2009 having been a Football League referee since 2003. He’s used mainly in the top flight this season although three times this season he’s refereed a Football League game, the most recent being Preston’s 3-2 win against Blackburn at Deepdale last Saturday.

He’s refereed a total of 14 games in which there have been 61 yellow cards. Of those cards, 29 have gone to home team players and 32 to away team players. He hasn’t had a card free game since this weekend a year ago while the last player he sent off was Leeds goalkeeper Marco Silvestri in a 2-1 defeat at Rotherham last April in a game that also saw Rotherham’s Matt Derbyshire sent off.

His last game was Manchester City’s 2-0 midweek win against Watford. City had Pablo Zabaleta yellow carded alongside Watford’s Sebastien Prodl and Etienne Capoue.

Kevin Friend has a RATE THE REF rating of 62.26 out of 100.

The assistant referees are Mark Scholes (Buckinghamshire) and Derek Eaton (Gloucestershire). The fourth official is Stuart Attwell (Nuneaton) whose last Burnley game was the 0-0 draw at QPR a year ago.
