Yesterday’s defeat at Peterborough has seen the under-21s drop a place in the Professional Development League table to fifth when a win would have taken us up to third.

The result also gave Peterborough their first points of the season having lost their first seven games but it’s not enough to lift them off the bottom. They are still three points behind Coventry who also have a game in hand.

That third spot is held by Sheffield Wednesday who had the honour of becoming the second team to take a point from their neighbours Sheffield United last Friday; the game ending in a 2-2 draw. That did open the door for Birmingham to move up to second; a door they went through with a 2-0 win at Fleetwood two days ago. One of the two Wednesday goals in that Steel City derby was scored by Bailey Cadamarteri and in doing so he became the first player to reach double figures this season.

Sheffield United still have a healthy lead at the top. They are five points of Birmingham and have a game in hand. Their form has been outstanding; in eight games they have scored 31 goals and concede six, the best record in the league of any club.

They might be some way clear in the north group but there has been a change of leadership in the south with Millwall replacing QPR at the top. The previous leaders had been beaten just once all season, at Burnley, but fell to defeat yesterday at Bristol City. That allowed Millwall, who had won at Charlton on Monday to go ahead of them, to remain at the top with a two point advantage.

That win has taken Bristol City into third place, ahead of Bournemouth on goal difference and Bournemouth must offer some entertaining football. They’ve conceded just eight goals this season, a total only bettered by Sheffield United, but they’ve scored only six times. They scored twice in their opening game, winning 2-0 at Coventry, but haven’t scored since. Defensively, they were beaten 3-0 at Barnsley and 4-0 at Hull but have conceded just one goal in the other five games.

This week’s fixtures kick off on Friday when Bournemouth travel to Cardiff and end next Tuesday with five games. We are not involved this week; instead we’ll be playing Blackburn at Gawthorpe next Monday in the Central League Cup; we are currently the only team in the competition still to play.

The player featured this week is Kian Le Fondre who has returned this season after suffering a long-term injury.
