A Joe Smyth-Ferguson goal, his fourth of the season, gave the under-18s a first half lead but Derby County came back in the second half to equalise with the game ending at 1-1.

A young Burnley team featuring eight first year scholars and one under-15 player, took the lead just past the half hour when Smyth-Ferguson (pictured) netted from close range after trialist Derby goalkeeper Max Flatters had parried the ball out to him.

We looked set to double that lead in the second half on a couple of occasions, with Smyth-Ferguson missing the best of them to add to his tally and that gave Derby the opportunity to get back into it and they took it on 73 minutes when Luke Plange headed home.

It all ended all square at 1-1 to leave Burnley in ninth place in the table and with just one game to look forward to this Wednesday and that is against Manchester City who will need a win to finish as champions.

Today’s teams were;

Burnley: Harry Allen, Keelan Williams, Jack Leckie, Dan Sassi, Dane McCullough, George Walters, Jacson Coppack (Will Hugill ht), Joe Bauress (Benn Ward 77), Ruairi Behan, Tremaine Eastmond, Joe Smyth-Ferguson (Michael Mellon 61). Subs not used: Charlie Casper, Kade Ratchford.
