Burnley’s Premier League game tomorrow against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium will be refereed by Andre Marriner and it will be only the second time he’s refereed a Burnley away game and the other was over ten years ago.

The 47-year-old Marriner, from Birmingham, first became a Football League referee in 2003 and was promoted to the Premier League in 2005. He had a busy start to his Football League career. He sent off Lincoln’s Simon Yeo in his first ever game and two more followed in his next three games.

His first Premier League game actually came in November 2004 between Charlton and Norwich at The Valley but it was March 2006 before he refereed a Burnley game, a 1-1 home draw against Southampton in which Andy Gray scored our goal on a night when there were no cards.

He’s never been a regular for us and tomorrow will be only his ninth Burnley game with seven of them at home. The one other away game he refereed was our 3-0 defeat at Blackpool on New Year’s Day 2008.

We didn’t even see him in our first Premier League season of 2009/10 but he has since refereed four of our Premier League games, three in the 2014/15 season and one last season, although his last Burnley game was our FA Cup 4th round tie against Bristol City last season.

We’ve not seen any poor performances from him and he currently sits in 4th place in RATE THE REF with a rating of 75.28 out of 100.

This season he’s refereed twenty games domestically to add to one World Cup qualifier and two Europa League games. Other than a couple of cup ties they’ve all been in the Premier League; he hasn’t refereed a Football League game, other than a play-off, since February last year.

In those twenty games there have been 49 yellow and two red cards. Of those yellows, 25 have gone to home team players and 24 to away team players. The two players he’s sent off are Jonjo Shelvey in Newcastle’s opening day 2-0 defeat at home against Spurs, and Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba in their 3-1 win at Arsenal.

The assistant referees are Constantine Hatzidakis (Kent) and Sian Massey-Ellis (West Midlands). The fourth official is Stuart Attwell (Nuneaton) whose one Burnley game this season was the 1-1 home draw against West Ham in October.
