1718 burnley nick pope 00 500x500The big news for Burnley fans today was a return to action for goalkeeper Nick Pope who lined up for the under-23s against Sheffield United but Dan Agyei grabbed the headlines with two goals to secure a 3-1 win for the Clarets.

As was the case last week against Leeds, we came up against a much more experienced team as the Blades fielded such as Kieron Freeman, John Lundstram, Kean Bryan and former Claret Danny Lafferty but we were soon on the front foot when Dwight McNeil, who has missed the last two games, opened the scoring with a superb effort.

We were so close to getting a second almost immediately with Agyei hitting the post but the home side then drew level with Stephen Mallon converting after Lafferty pulled the ball back. That was ten minutes before half time but just before the break we were in front again when Agyei netted from close range.

Agyei doubled our advantage midway through the half and only an assistant’s flag prevented him from scoring a hat trick as the Clarets ran out 3-1 winners and will now await tonight’s results to see whether we go into Christmas at the top of the league or in second place.

The teams were;

Sheffield United: Jake Eastwood, Jean Belehouan, Kean Bryan, Jordan Doherty, Sam Graham, Reece York, Kieron Freeman, John Lundstram, Tyler Smith, Stephen Mallon, Danny Lafferty.

Burnley: Nick Pope, Jordan Cropper, Oliver Younger, Anthony Glennon, Ali Koiki, Tunde Bayode (Marley Blair 40), Josh Benson, Dwight McNeil, Tinashe Chakwana, Rob Harker, Dan Agyei. Subs not used: George McMahon, Ed Cook, Mark Howarth, Trialist.
