The name John Cofie remains of interest to Burnley supporters, the unknown player who we sold to Manchester United for a big fee just over nine years ago when he was aged just 14.

Things haven’t quite gone to plan for the youngster we brought from Germany who went on to play for our youth team not long past his 14th birthday and who, by the start of the 2007/08 season, was made unavailable to Burnley while courted by Liverpool and United.

He was in the youth team at Old Trafford alongside current first teamers Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba and Burnley central defender Michael Keane (the picture shows him after the final win against Sheffield United with Will & Michael Keane and Ryan Tunnicliffe) but, after loans with the likes of Sheffield United and Notts County, he was released in the summer of 2013 and signed for Barnsley.

Unable to get a game there he moved to Molde in Norway but returned before the end of the season to make one substitute appearance for Crawley. He’s since played for Wrexham, AFC Telford and his current club Southport.

Six weeks ago we brought the news that he’d signed a one month loan deal with Bradford Park Avenue. He made three appearances for them during the month, two of them from the bench, and scored one goal, a header in a 3-1 home defeat against Kidderminster Harriers in one of his two substitute appearances.

Having returned to Southport, he’s now gone out on loan again, this time for an initial one month to Chorley. He was close to signing for them in the summer and was training with them when Southport came in to sign him.

Chorley boss Matt Janssen has confirmed that Cofie will go straight into the squad for their game against AFC Fylde this Sunday.
