Last week, our game at Brentford was refereed by Josh Smith who was taking a Burnley game for the first time and tomorrow it’s almost the same at Bournemouth with the game to be refereed by Sam Barrott.

Barrott has just once previously refereed us and that was almost a year ago when he took charge of our League Cup third round tie against Crawley Town at home. That’s once more than Bournemouth who he will be refereeing for the first time.

Barrott, like Smith, is a Select Group 2 official who only joined the national list in 2020. His first league game was Salford’s 2-2 home draw against Exeter in September 2020. It was more than two years before he was allocated a Championship game; that came when Stoke won at Wigan last season in November.

When this season kicked off, he’d refereed just four times in the Championship but it had won him a place on Select Group 2. Six of the 30-year-old’s first seven games this season were in the Championship with the one other in the League Cup. But his two most recent games have come in the Premier League, firstly refereeing Fulham v Sheffield United three weeks ago and then Nottingham Forest v Luton last week which suggests the West Yorkshire official will be moving into the Select Group next season.

That’s a total of nine games this season in which there have been 34 yellow and two red cards. Eighteen of those yellows have gone to home team players with sixteen to away team players. The two players he’s sent off were both playing for home teams in defeats. He sent off Sunderland’s Trai Hume in their opening day 2-1 defeat against Ipswich; two weeks later Bristol City’s Rob Dickie saw red as they lost by the same scoreline against Birmingham.

There have been three yellow cards in each of his two Premier League games. In the last of them, the 2-2 draw between Forest and Luton, he carded three home players, they were Murillo, Morgan Gibbs-White and Ibrahim Sangaré.

Fourth official tomorrow is Rob Jones who refereed, or tried to referee, our recent 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest. David Coote is on VAR duty; he last refereed us in November last year in our memorable 3-0 win against Blackburn.
