Four years ago, Burnley defender David Edgar made three appearances for Canada in the CONCACAF Gold Cup and, by then at Birmingham, he followed that up with three more appearances in the 2015 competition.

1516 burnley scott arfield 00 630x420Edgar is currently fighting back from a serious injury sustained in a hit and run incident in Arizona in December of last year, but there will be a Burnley representative at this year’s Gold Cup with Scott Arfield having been selected in their 23 man squad.

Arfield, who will wear number 8 in the tournament, is one of five English players in a squad that has been described by coach Octavio Zambrano as a dynamic team that has speed and offensive weapons. He added: “We have a balance between offence and defence. We want to go forward and have a high tempo, but we also have to make sure we have the defenders that are up to the task in our end.”

They go into the competition with just nine players who featured two years ago but Zambrano believes this to be a far better squad.

Their tournament kicks off in Harrison, New Jersey on 7th July with a game against French Guiana before they move on to Texas to face Costa Rica in Houston and Honduras in Frisco, those two games on 11th and 14th July.

That will keep Arfield away from our early pre-season, that’s for sure, with the third of those games coming later in the same day we play Shamrock Rovers. Much will then depend on Canada’s progress as to when he returns. The quarter-finals, which follow the group games, will be played on 19th and 20th July with the semi-finals on 22nd and 23rd. The final will be played on 26th July.
