Atkinson gets a Burnley home game
Martin Atkinson has refereed two of our away games this season at Everton and Manchester City, would have refereed the home fixture against Watford on its original date but will be in charge tomorrow for our home game against Liverpool.
Last Tuesday it was Mike Dean, the league’s most experienced referee and now Atkinson who is not far behind him as the second most experienced who first refereed us at Crewe when the lights went out almost seventeen years ago.
He’s currently up in third place in RATE THE REF with a rating of 78.32 out of 100, behind just Dean and Andre Marriner. He’s had his moments in Burnley games and has sent off four players. First to go was Andre Bikey playing in his final game for Reading against us in the play-offs in 2009. Nemanja Matic went at Chelsea while Jose Mourinho counted the minutes and he dismissed West Brom’s Hal Robson-Kanu on the Turf. The one Burnley player to see his red card is Ashley Barnes at Hull in February five years ago.
Atkinson has refereed fifteen games this season, one in the League Cup and the rest in the Premier League. He’s shown a total of 38 yellow and three red cards. Of the yellows, 21 have gone to home team players with 17 to away team players. He sent off Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka in a 5-0 defeat against Manchester City and also his teammate Thomas Partey in the League Cup against Arsenal. The other player he sent off was Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse in a 3-1 loss at Chelsea.
Graham Scott is fourth official. His one Burnley game this season was the home 0-0 draw against West Ham. Darren England is on VAR duty; his most recent Burnley game as referee was last season’s 4-0 win at Wolves.
