Atkinson in charge of Swansea game
Tomorrow sees a second Burnley game of the season for Leeds based Martin Atkinson who previously refereed our 1-0 home defeat against West Brom.
Only Mike Dean, who refereed our last home game against Newcastle, has been a member of the select group longer than Atkinson who was promoted, along with Andre Marriner, in 2005. By then he’d refereed his first two Burnley games, his first at Crewe on a night when he had to contend with the floodlights going out.
He’s certainly been a regular for us in the seasons we’ve been in the Premier League. Along with Dean, he’s refereed Burnley in 11 Premier League games and that’s the most of the 24 referees who have refereed us in our recent top flight seasons.
His performances have given him a RATE THE REF rating of 74.84 out of 100 and he’s currently in 5th place in the table.
This season he’s refereed a total of seven games with six of them in the Premier League and one in the Championship. There’s been just the one red card, that of Hal Robson-Kanu on his last visit to Turf Moor. There have been a total of 17 yellow cards of which eight have gone to home team players and nine to away team players.
Tomorrow will be his first game for four weeks, the last being Brighton’s 3-0 win at West Ham on 20th October. There was just one red card in that game, that of West Ham’s Javier Hernandez.
Hopefully he’ll be at his best tomorrow and hopefully he won’t have to deal with any failing floodlights. He certainly won’t have to deal with Jose Mourinho; Atkinson was the referee on the occasion of our 1-1 draw at Chelsea back in 2014/15.
The assistant referees are Stephen Child (Kent) and Peter Kirkup (Northamptonshire). The fourth official is Lee Mason (Bolton) whose last Burnley game was our 1-1 draw against Spurs at Wembley in August.
