Tomorrow’s home game against Chelsea will be refereed by Stuart Attwell and it will be only his second visit to Turf Moor in almost five years.

It will be his sixteenth Burnley game in total which started with the 3-3 draw against Manchester City on our first visit to the Etihad Stadium back in 2009.

For whatever reason, his Burnley games dried up a few years ago. Having refereed our home game against Liverpool in December 2018 and our game at Brighton in February of the same season, he didn’t referee another Burnley game until the home game against Southampton which was Michael Jackson’s first home game in caretaker charge of the Clarets.

It was strange that in over three years as a Premier League club, he wasn’t allocated a single Burnley game home or away but there was a point in time when he almost became our resident VAR official almost to the point that it looked as if he had a Burnley season ticket for watching games from Stockley Park.

For all the furore in his early days, he’s never really caused us too many problems on the occasions he’s refereed us, and hopefully that will continue tomorrow.

This season he’s refereed four Premier League games and the Community Shield game at Wembley between Arsenal and Manchester City. There were four yellow cards in that game and there have been a further 22 in the four subsequent games along with one red card. Of those yellows, twelve have gone to home team players with ten to away team players. The one player shown a red card came in Nottingham Forest’s 3-2 defeat at Manchester United; they had Joe Worrall sent off with the score at 2-2.

Attwell’s most recent game was a one sided one both in terms of result and cards. The game was Newcastle’s 8-0 win at Sheffield United where all four players carded were from the home side; they were Anel Ahmedhodzic, Jack Robinson, Anis Ben Slimane and John Egan.

Fourth official tomorrow is Oliver Langford who refereed us three times last season, the last of which was the 0-0 draw at Reading. Darren Bond is on VAR duty. The last of his four Burnley games last season was on that wonderful night at Middlesbrough when we clinched promotion.
