Stuart Attwell will referee Burnley’s FA Cup tie against Sunderland tomorrow. It will be his eleventh Burnley game and his ninth away from Turf Moor.

Attwell is back on the select group this season having previously been axed. He had a torrid time when he was first there, his list of horrendous performances are well documented and I don’t think he’ll ever forget the phantom goal incident at Watford.

He was one of the referees promoted to the select group last summer and the 34-year-old from Nuneaton has avoided the controversy that he came up against previously although only five of his 14 games so far have been in the Premier League.

In those 14 games he’s issued 50 yellow and three red cards. Of those yellow cards, 26 have gone to home team players and 24 to away team players. Two of the three red cards came in the same game, leaving Swindon with nine men in a 2-0 defeat at Oxford. The third was a straight red, and a fully deserved one, for Rotherham’s Peter Odemwingie in a 2-1 home defeat against Leeds.

Despite everything, we’ve never really had any problems with him. There has been just the one red card in his Burnley games and that was without doubt a correct decision to send off Henri Lansbury in our 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest last season.

There were five yellow cards in his last game, Brighton’s 2-1 win at Fulham last Monday. Ryan Fredericks and Matt Smith of Fulham were booked as were all of Brighton’s Bruno, Lewis Dunk and Anthony Knockaert.

Stuart Attwell has a RATE THE REF rating of 64.97 out of 100 and is currently in ninth place. If we referees as he’s done previous Burnley games, I’ll have no complaints.

The assistant referees are Marc Perry (West Midlands) and Derek Eaton (Gloucestershire). The fourth official is Football League referee Scott Duncan (Northumberland) whose last Burnley game was our 3-1 win at Huddersfield last season.
