Burnley beat Birmingham City last Saturday in the U18 Professional Development League, a result that keeps us in third place but now behind leaders Sheffield Wednesday only on goal difference.

1819 burnley matty oneill 00 500x500I thought Saturday’s game was going to be a really difficult one. Michael Fowler, Will Harris, Ethan Kershaw and Richard Taylor are now all out on loan while both Rhys Fenlon and Terry Mupariwa were on duty with the under-23s and that will have left us with a very inexperienced line up for the game.

But we went 2-0 up in the first half through Kai Smith, his third of the season, and an own goal with Matty O’Neill scoring for the second successive game in the second half before Birmingham scored a late consolation goal.

We remain in third place and still behind Nottingham Forest, who won at Sheffield United, on goal difference. But we’ve both caught Sheffield Wednesday who could only draw at Bolton. All three of us are on 18 points with Leeds, who beat Hull, just three points behind and with a game in hand.

Hull remain the only team in the north group without a win and it’s the same for Colchester in the south group after they lost at Bristol City.

At the top of the south group, leaders Ipswich were beaten at QPR but second place Cardiff couldn’t take advantage; they were beaten at Coventry and remain behind the leaders on goal difference.

This week sees a full fixture list in the north group, with us travelling to face Nottingham Forest, one of the teams above us, but there are just two fixtures in the south group.
