Back home at Gawthorpe for the under-21s
After two defeats at Barnsley and Sheffield United, the under-21s are back home this afternoon with Peterborough United our visitors at Gawthorpe.
Recent wins against play-off rivals Hull and then Coventry had boosted hopes of a top two finish but defeats in the last two weeks at Barnsley (0-3) and at leaders Sheffield United (0-4) have left us three points behind both Wigan and Hull although we do have a game in hand on both.
With neither of that pair having a game this week, today’s game gives us an opportunity to move behind them on goal difference when we take on a Peterborough side who are currently third from bottom in the table.
In their first season in the Professional Development League, they have won six of their twenty games to date and have played the two teams in second and third places in their most recent three games. They beat Wigan at home 2-1 three weeks ago but a week later were beaten by the same scoreline, again at home, by Hull. Last week they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Coventry.
Elsewhere today, Crewe are at home against Ipswich. That game might not look too significant but Crewe, who have four points less than us with three games in hand, are now the only team who can mathematically go past leaders Sheffield United. Anything but a win for Crewe will confirm Sheffield United as the league champions.
This is the first season we’ve met Peterborough at this level and things didn’t go too well for us when we played the away game in November. We were beaten 4-1 with Michael Mellon, who has now been ruled out for the season with a shoulder injury that requires surgery, scoring our late consolation goal.
Today’s game at Gawthorpe kicks off at the later than usual time of 3 p.m.
