Back to square one for youth team
Having beaten Sheffield United just over a week ago, our under-18s had moved within two points of second place Leeds United in the U18 Professional Development League, but the latest set of fixtures have seen Leeds go five points clear again with us having no game.
Leeds won last Saturday at Birmingham, a result which has taken their points total to 50, five points ahead of ours but once again we go back to having two games in hand although we will have to win them both to get above them. It’s also moved Leeds to the top of the table ahead of Sheffield Wednesday who, like us, were without a game. Wednesday also have two games in hand but trail Leeds by just one point and remain firm favourites to win the northern group.
There was some good news from just below us with fourth place Nottingham Forest suffering a defeat at Barnsley. It leaves them still one point behind us but, like Leeds, they have now played two games more. Sheffield United, meanwhile, due to having played less games than anyone else, could only draw and their chances now of reaching the top two look very remote.
By this time next week, we will have played one of those games in hand. We travel to Crystal Palace this Saturday while Leeds are at QPR and next Tuesday we are at home against Birmingham in a re-arranged game.
In the south, Ipswich moved within one point of leaders Cardiff with a win against Charlton and with third place Millwall only drawing yesterday against Bolton it stretched their lead over them to seven points with both having four games to play.
The player featured this week is Ethan Kershaw. He is one of the players released recently and currently playing on loan at Barnoldswick.
