Our League Cup tie tonight was initially scheduled to be refereed by Oliver Langford but the man in charge now is Anthony Backhouse. Tonight will see him referee Burnley for the first time.

The 32-year-old from Cumbria first refereed in the Football League in August 2017 when he took charge of a League Two game between Coventry and Notts County. After six years, he’s stepped up to Select Group 2 this season although he had previously refereed in the Championship, that first game coming in December 2019 between Hull and Birmingham.

In this, his first season at the new level, he’s refereed six games. He kicked off his season with a League Cup tie and then had three appointments in League One before getting two Championship games at Bristol City and Swansea.

There have been 27 yellow cards in those games with one red card. Eleven of those yellows have gone to home team players with sixteen to away team players. The player he sent off was Stevenage’s Nathan Thompson in a 2-0 defeat at Reading.

His last game was Swansea’s 3-0 home win against Sheffield Wednesday three days ago. Swansea had both Liam Cullen and Charlie Patino carded alongside Wednesday pair Pol Valentin and former Claret Jeff Hendrick.

There is no VAR in operation but the fourth official is Matt Donohue who, unlike Backhouse, has refereed Burnley, twice in fact, the home wins last season against Huddersfield and Cardiff.
