Peter Bankes will referee our League Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur tonight in what will be his first Burnley game since the home draw against Sheffield United in July 2020.

It will be just his fifth Burnley game since becoming a Football League referee. Apart from that Sheffield United game, he also refereed our home game against Crystal Palace in the same season and was referee for the game at Rotherham and the home fixture against Ipswich in the 2015/16 season.

His performances to date don’t reassure. He’s bottom of RATE THE REF with a rating of just 43.19 out of 100. He has the lowest rating in three of the disciplines but sees both Jon Moss and Paul Tierney below him in the fitness and positioning category.

This season he’s refereed a total of six games, four of them in the Premier League and one each in the Championship and League Cup; he refereed Tottenham’s penalty shoot out win at Wolves in the last round.

In those games there have been 34 yellow cards and one red card. Of the yellows, sixteen of them have gone to home team players with eighteen to away team players while the one player sent off was Middlesbrough’s Matt Crooks in their 1-0 defeat at Reading. It brought an outburst from Neil Warnock who, for once, was absolutely right. It was a shocking decision which was rightly rescinded on appeal.

Bankes’ most recent game was the 0-0 draw between Norwich and Brighton at Carrow Road a week last Saturday. He was busy too. He yellow carded Norwich trio Ozan Kabak, Dimitrios Giannoulis and Teemu Pukki alongside no fewer than five Brighton players, namely Marc Cucurella, Shane Duffy, Dan Burn, Joel Veltman and Adam Lallana.

The fourth official tonight is Mike Dean who last refereed us earlier in the season at Liverpool. VAR is not in operation for this fixture although it is worth noting that goal line technology will be used in a game in which both teams can make five substitutions.
