Our game tonight at Luton will be refereed by Peter Bankes from Liverpool who will be taking charge of a Burnley game for the eighth time.

His first Burnley game came eight years ago in the televised 2-1 win at Rotherham and four of the previous seven have been at that level including last season’s away games at Preston and QPR. It will, however, be the first time he’s refereed us on the road in the Premier League having been the referee for our home games against Crystal Palace and Sheffield United in the 2019/20 season and against Spurs in 2021/22.

Bankes became a Select Group referee four years ago with his first Premier League game coming in August when he refereed Leicester’s 3-1 home win against Bournemouth; our home game against Crystal Palace was his third.

He’s been used almost exclusively at the top level in 2023 which just one Championship game between QPR and Sunderland in February. This season, he’s had just four games with all of them in the Premier League. There were five yellow cards in each of his first two games but none in the third. He went to town in his most recent game which was two weeks ago. He showed twelve yellow cards and one red card in the Spurs v Sheffield United game, a game that left Blades’ boss Paul Heckingbottom launching an attack on the standard of refereeing.

Of his 22 yellow cards, nine have gone to home team players with thirteen to away team players. As for that most recent game, it’s probably best to list the cards.

The fourth official is Jarred Gillett who refereed two Burnley games last season, the most recent of them being the 0-0 home draw against Sunderland. Michael Salisbury is on VAR duty; he refereed our home game against Aston Villa in August.

There is a change of official on the line. Edward Smart has been replaced by Lee Betts. This is due to Smart now having run the line last night at the Fulham v Chelsea game, replacing Dan Cook who has been stood down due to his involvement in the fiasco that was Spurs v Liverpool last Saturday.
