Bankes will referee at Deepdale
Tonight’s game against Preston North End at Deepdale will be refereed by Select Group official Peter Bankes from Liverpool.
Bankes will oversee a Burnley game for just the sixth time with two of the previous five coming in the Premier League, two in the Championship and his most recent in last season’s League Cup defeat at the hands of Spurs.
Promoted to the Select Group in 2019, all his league games this season have been in the Premier League so tonight will be his first dip into the Football League. He’s refereed four Premier League games and one League Cup tie along with two European games, issuing no fewer than ten yellow cards in a game between Panathinaikos and Slavia Prague.
Domestically, he’s shown 29 yellow cards in five games, just short of six per game, although there have been no red cards. Sixteen of those cards have gone to home team players with thirteen to away team players. His last red card was that of Brighton’s Lewis Dunk in their 2-0 defeat at Manchester United in February and his last red in the Championship came at Reading when he dismissed Middlesbrough’s Matt Crooks in their 1-0 defeat. Middlesbrough successfully appealed that card, and rightly so.
Bankes’ most recent game was the 1-1 draw between West Ham and Spurs at the London Stadium almost two weeks ago. That night, both Emerson and Lucas Paqueta of West Ham were shown yellow cards as were all of Tottenham’s Davison Sanchez, Ben Davies, Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison.
The fourth official tonight is David Webb. His most recent Burnley game was the 1-0 home win against Brentford in August 2015.
