Barnes tops the poll in Greece
Today we are moving on to the 1st leg of our Europa League play-off against Olympiacos as we catch up on the man of the match voting and the player ratings.
This was the night in Piraeus when we suffered our only defeat in the competition, losing 3-1 and controversially going down to ten men.
Striker Ashley Barnes, who started up front alongside Chris Wood, won both the vote and the ratings in a really good performance, particularly in the first half.
He secured 31% of the man of the match vote, almost double the 16% claimed by Jack Cork who took second place. Central defender Kevin Long was third with 14% while goalkeeper and captain Tom Heaton, in his first competitive game for almost a year, was fourth with a 6% share of the vote.
Just four players won a rating above the average six out of ten. Barnes was again the winner with a rating of 6.44 out of 10, followed by James Tarkowski who scored 6.38 having come on as a substitute following Ben Gibson’s red card. His defensive partner Long, was third this time with a rating of 6.25 and 6.06 out of 10 won fourth place for Cork.
That brings ten points for Barnes towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year. Both Cork and Long won four points, Tarkowski got three points and there was one point for Heaton. Those points have taken Cork one further point clear at the top and big winner Barnes has moved into fourth place.
