Barton and Kightly released by Clarets
Burnley have this afternoon confirmed their retained list. It contains no surprises whatsoever with Joey Barton and Michael Kightly the two senior players to be released.
Neither can be a surprise. Kights has been out at Burton Albion since the last transfer window while Barton, as it stands, would not be able to be involved with the club again until October 2018 at the end of his ban.
The two other first team squad players out of contract are George Boyd and Paul Robinson. Talks continue with those two players over new deals. It is believed that Boyd would prefer a longer deal to the one currently on offer while Robinson, who Sean Dyche is reportedly keen to keep, might wish to look elsewhere if he feels he can still play more regularly.
Dyche said of the pair leaving: “Joey leaves us for the obvious reasons after he has again been a big part of what we have achieved this season. Equally, Kights has been a great servant of the club and always a tremendous person to have around the group. Both players have had a big effect on what we have done during their time at Turf Moor and we wish them well, as we do all those leaving this summer.
The only other member of the first team squad to depart is Jon Flanagan who has returned to Liverpool at the end of his loan, but there are two members of the development squad also leaving.
George Green, who ended the season on loan at Salford, will depart as will central defender Taofiq Olomowewe. The club have also confirmed the departure of Christian Hill but he left the club at Christmas after having had a terrible time with injuries over two seasons.
Defender Luke Hendrie, who returns from his loan at Kilmarnock, defender Alex Whitmore, who has been at Morecambe, and full back Arlen Birch will all stay having had their contracts extended by a further year.
Finally, the club has confirmed that Rouwen Hennings is expected to return to Burnley next season having been out on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf throughout most of the 2016/17 season.Share this page :
