barton marneyThe vote to select two central midfielders for the team of the last ten years came to an end last night. There were never going to be runaway winners as had been the case for some of the other positions but there were still two clear winners in Joey Barton and Dean Marney.

Over half cast their vote for Barton, some 667 votes won from 1,291 voters, a total of 52% and he was the clear winner ahead of Dean Marney whose 544 votes gave him second place. It’s not a pairing that played too often together,  seven times in fact during the 2015/16 promotion season with Barton returning in the following season to replace Marney who had suffered his second cruciate injury at Arsenal.

Steven Defour was third but I wonder just how many more votes he would have won than his final total of 358 had he not had so long out with injury. He was just ahead of Jack Cork (334 votes) while two other players reached double figures with Graham Alexander winning 221 votes and Ashley Westwood finishing on 185.

The rest were the also rans. It’s hard to believe now that David Jones, who was so influential in our two promotions, is as low down as seventh with 53 votes and he’s followed by Chris McCann (30), Jeff Hendrick (23), Brian Stock (11), Marvin Bartley (8) and Kevin McDonald (40).

Seven places filled and the vote for the two wide midfielders will be underway later today.
