Ben leads from the back at Brighton
We had the boost of Ben Mee’s return at Brighton last Friday and his performance in what was a good defensive display went a long way to ensuring we picked up a second clean sheet and a second point this season.
It was all about the defenders in our man of the match vote and the player ratings with the captain, who was playing for the first time since we beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park in late June, winning both and by some distance.
He polled 51% of the man of the match vote, way ahead of goalkeeper Nick Pope who was second with a 22% share. Left back Charlie Taylor took third place with 12% while 3% of the vote just took Matt Lowton into fourth place.
Although not the same four, and not the same order, it was defenders again at the top of the player ratings. Mee was again the winning with a rating of 7.95 out of 10, and other than in the League Cup win at Millwall, that’s the highest rating we’ve had for any player this season. James Tarkowski and Taylor both had ratings of 7.21 which gave them joint second place while Pope came in fourth with a rating of 7.16 out of 10.
That result has given Mee, our player of the year winner in 2016/17, a maximum ten points towards this season’s award. Taylor won five points and that’s extended his lead at the top of the table to ten points ahead of Josh Brownhill. Pope won four points and there were three points for Tarkowski with one point for Lowton.
We’ve got a break this weekend with the next vote coming after the Crystal Palace game which is currently still scheduled for 3 p.m. on the Saturday.
