Once again it was a nightmare against Manchester City as we succumbed to a fourth successive 5-0 Etihad Stadium defeat and it was an afternoon with just one shining light, that of 20-year-old midfielder Josh Benson who made his Premier League debut.

Benson, who first appeared for Burnley as a trialist in a Professional Development League game at Curzon Ashton back in March 2018, had featured in the League Cup games in September, including the home defeat against Manchester City, but with Jack Cork, Dale Stephens and then Josh Brownhill all ruled out he was given the opportunity against a team who put Kevin de Bruyne, for one, up against him in the midfield.

Sean Dyche was pleased with his performance and so were the supporters overall and on such a difficult day for the Clarets he turned in a performance that has won him both the man of the match and the player ratings on Up the Clarets.

There was never any question that he was going to be the man of the match winner. He led from the start and when voting closed he’d secured 53% of those cast with Dwight McNeil in second place with 17%. Jay Rodriguez took third place with a 9% share while 5% of the vote took Matt Lowton into fourth place.

We had the same top three in the ratings with Benson scoring exactly six out of ten. Behind him was McNeil  with 5.87 and Rodriguez who had a rating of 5.27. Ashley Westwood claimed the fourth place with a rating of 5.13 out of 10.

This resulted in Benson winning ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year. There were six points for McNeil, four for Rodriguez with both Lowton and Westwood winning one point.

This game completed November and the player of the month with 15 points was Ben Mee who had returned to the team at Brighton and, prior to this match, had helped us to two clean sheets. He beat Nick Pope by just one point.

There has been little change in the player of the year table with none of the top four winning any points. McNeil, however, has now moved into fifth place.

The next vote will follow the Everton game this Saturday.
