Burnley won thirteen of last season’s twenty-three away games in the Championship with a couple of cup wins on the road to that and all fifteen listed as this week has been spent finding the best away performance of the season.

Since Up the Clarets’ first full season in 2016/17, this award has been won with wins at Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Manchester United, Wolves and Brighton. Now we can add our first ever win at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light to that group with the 4-2 win there last October.

At half time, I think most of us would have been excited had we been told we’d get a point. That was when we went in at the break with a two goal deficit, but a sensational 45 minutes brought goals from Nathan Tella, Manuel Benson, Anass Zaroury and Josh Brownhill to claim a very significant 4-2 win.

Vincent Kompany recently described as the day he realised we had a team good enough to win the league. It really was a memorable second half that blew away a Sunderland team who had played so well in the first half.

It has remained memorable with our fans too, and in this week’s vote it polled 31% to become the clear winner. The 3-0 win at Norwich, which came as they were settling into some good form under new manage David Wagner, was second with 15% and 14% voted for that wonderful Good Friday night at Middlesbrough when we beat the in form home side to win 2-1.

The Blackburn title winning victory was next with a 10% share and it was followed by the 3-0 win at QPR and the 5-1 demolition of Wigan, those two winning nine and eight percent of the vote each, both just ahead of the 4-2 cup win at Bournemouth which polled seven percent.

That’s it for the 2022/23 season. Josh Cullen was chosen as our player of the year with Manuel Benson’s stunning Ewood Park winner getting the goal of the season. The Sunderland win is placed alongside the 3-0 win against Blackburn which last week was voted as our best home performance.

All of the winners have now been added to Up the Clarets Awards which can be found on the top menu.
