The Professional Development League got underway this week with seven games played between teams in the north and south groups, and Wigan were the big winners with a 5-0 thumping against Watford.

They were one of three northern winners in week one with three more, including ourselves, losing and the one game ending in a draw.

Josh Stones netted twice in Wigan’s win against Watford, one of two players to score twice in the opening week. The other northern winners were the two Sheffield clubs, Wednesday beating Swansea on Monday and United recording a win against Reading on the following day.

Peterborough, newcomers to the league having moved up from a Category 3 academy, drew their opener against QPR while the two losers besides us were Hull and Barnsley. In a feisty game at Barnsley that saw them have Fabio Jalo sent off, the home side were beaten 3-2 in a game that saw Seb Palmer-Houlden score two of the Bristol City goals.

All of the northern teams were at home and next week all nine games will see the south clubs host all the games. That includes our game at Reading which will be played on Monday afternoon at the Select Car Leasing Stadium (previously known as the Madejski Stadium).

The player featured this week is Mark Helm who was in the midfield against Charlton as he kicks off his second season at Burnley.
