Four games played but just two goals scored, our under-18s hadn’t made the best of starts to the season but a big 6-2 win at QPR last Saturday brought us our first win and with any luck would have moved us up further than one place in the north group of the U18 Professional Development League.

It didn’t look as though things were going to be in our favour when Youssef Yahyaoui gave QPR, who are managed by former Burnley midfielder Micah Hyde, the lead with only 29 seconds gone. Thankfully, the lead lasted just ten minutes before Callum West equalised with a half volley.

Six minutes from the break, Yahyaoui restored the home side’s lead but it was all square at 2-2 when the half time whistle blew with Zach Johnson scoring our second with what QPR described as a sumptuous effort.

The second half belonged to Burnley. Vernon Masara gave us the lead for the first time with substitute Logan Carlin doubling our advantage before Jack Bates scored twice to complete a 6-2 win.

We’d started the day above both Peterborough and Wigan who were without a point. They both suffered defeats again and remain down at the bottom. Sheffield United were above us on goal difference while both Barnsley and Hull had only one point more.

Sheffield United, like us, recorded their first win and remain above us on goal difference and Hull won at Bournemouth, leaving Barnsley, who drew at Ipswich, the team we were able to pass. Right across the league, these three teams were the only winners from the north. Ours was the biggest win of the week although Colchester came close with their 4-1 win against Wigan.

Birmingham had no game but remain top with four wins from four games and Sheffield Wednesday are second; they lost their 100% record when they drew at Charlton while Coventry were beaten at Swansea, their first defeat of the season.

In the south, Bristol City remain top and are still to concede a goal. They have a three point lead over Watford. At the other end of the table, Cardiff, with one point, are now four points behind next team Ipswich.

The north v south games are coming to an end for now with just the Coventry v Bristol City game to be played tomorrow. Saturday will see five games involving the north group teams with Burnley due to meet Fleetwood for the first time.

The player featured this week is Jack Bates following his brace at QPR.
