Blackpool’s Alliance lead cut to one point
Walsall beat Bury last Saturday as Blackpool could only draw with third place Port Vale and those results have taken Walsall within one point of Blackpool at the top of the Youth Alliance League.
Both teams have played 18 games with Blackpool moving on to 38 points. Walsall have 37 with Port Vale in third place on 32 points although they have played a game more.
The ones to watch are Rochdale. Their win against Carlisle has moved them above us on goal difference into fourth place. Should they win all their games in hand it would leave them level with Walsall.
Without a game last week, we could have dropped two places but Bury’s loss at Walsall kept them a point behind us and they’ve now played a game more. It’s been something of a collapse for the Shakers who had been top of the league for so long earlier in the season.
Going back to Rochdale’s win. They beat bottom club Carlisle 4-1. It is not often a side will lose by such a scoreline and move up a place in the league but that’s exactly what happened. Wrexham had been bottom all season but moved ahead of Carlisle last week on goal difference. However, even Carlisle’s big defeat didn’t help when Wrexham fell to a 6-0 loss at Shrewsbury.
Leaders Blackpool are at home to Accrington this afternoon. Accrington have games in hand and a win would bring them level with us. They’ve had a more difficult time recently and Blackpool will be very much favourites.
Following the Accrington game they play third from bottom Tranmere at home this Saturday while Walsall travel to Morecambe.
Burnley travel to bottom club Wrexham and we’ll be looking to start another unbeaten run. We were narrowly beaten by Blackpool last time out and that had been our first defeat in nine league games since the beginning of October.
Last week’s results and this week’s fixtures are below with Burnley’s goalscorers and the current league table.
