1718 burnley steven defour 01 500x500Steven Defour had been an ever present in the Premier League for Burnley this season until last night’s game at Newcastle United when he was ruled out with an injury first made public by Sean Dyche earlier this week in his press conference.

Speculation was already suggesting that Defour could be out for some time, potentially until the end of the season, and that’s all but been confirmed by Dyche and, this morning, the player himself.

Dyche said after last night’s 1-1 draw: “Unfortunately, Steven is going to have an operation and be out for some time. That’s a blow to us and to Steven, of course. He has been playing with the problem for some time and didn’t know it was there.

“He just had a bit of a sore knee and so we sent him for a scan and there was a problem with his cartilage that the specialist will have to sort out and we’ll wait and see what he says after the operation.

“Steven was thoroughly enjoying his season and rightly so because he’s been excellent, so we wish him a speedy recovery.”

The club were reporting that he will be out for several months and that was confirmed by the player this morning via Twitter when he admitted that it was a hard one to take and that he was gutted to see his season end in this way.

It’s another blow for us with yet another player sustaining a long term injury that needs surgery. He’s played a major part in getting us to where we are right now, seventh in the Premier League, and we look forward to him pulling his claret and blue shirt on again next season in English football’s top flight.
