Tonight’s game at Rotherham will be refereed by Bobby Madley, the younger of the two refereeing brothers from Osset in West Yorkshire.

It’s over twelve years since he first refereed a Burnley game; that was in November 2011 when he was in charge of our 2-1 defeat at Birmingham. It was the first of the thirteen occasions he’s refereed a Burnley game. Four of the first six were in the Championship, alongside two cup ties as was the most recent and there were six Premier League games in the two seasons 2016/17 and 2017/18.

It was at the end of that 2017/18 that he lost his place as a referee after eight years working up from League Two to the Premier League, but he returned after two and a half years and has worked his way back to Select Group 2 this season and has already taken charge of one Premier League game ahead of an expected return to the Select Group.

He’s up in tenth place in RATE THE REF with a rating of 62.81 out of 100, this after his one previous Burnley game this season for our second home game against Hull.

Tomorrow will be just his twentieth game this season. Ten of the nineteen to date have been in the Championship but he hasn’t refereed a game at this level since October. A week later he took charge of the Premier League game between Brentford and Wolves but did not referee again until January. He had one game in January, one in February but then didn’t return until this month and this will be his fourth April game.

In his nineteen games this season he’s shown 85 yellow and six red cards. Of those yellows, 36 have gone to away team players and 49 to away team players. The first four of his red cards came in the Championship. Preston’s Ched Evans was first in their opening day 0-0 draw at Wigan and he was followed by Coventry’s Gus Hamer in a 3-2 defeat at Millwall. Swansea’s Ben Cabango was sent off in their 2-1 loss at Middlesbrough and those three all came in the first four weeks of the season.

He dismissed Luton’s Gabriel Osho in October as they crashed 4-0 at Watford and a week later, on his return to the Premier League, he sent off Diego Costa as Wolves drew 1-1 at Brentford. Finally, at the beginning of this month, he sent off Shrewsbury’s Tom Flanagan in a 6-0 loss at Charlton.

Madley’s last game was the 2-2 League Two draw between Harrogate and Doncaster. There were just two yellow cards in this game to Harrogate’s Toby Sims and Doncaster’s Liam Ravenhill.

Fourth official today is Ross Joyce from Cleveland, a league referee since the beginning of the 2015/16 season. He’s still to referee a Burnley game.
