Our home game tonight against Hull City will be refereed by Bobby Madley in what will be his seventh Turf Moor game and his thirteenth Burnley game overall.

It’s some time since the younger of the two Madley brothers refereed a Burnley game. That was in April 2018 when Chelsea beat us 2-1 on the Turf and a lot has happened to him since. He refereed just one more Premier League game after ours that season along with one game in the Championship and finally a play-off semi-final.

He was sacked by PGMOL that summer for non-football reasons and didn’t referee again in England until October 2020 when he was in charge of the League Two game between Morecambe and Port Vale having been re-admitted via the National List.

For two seasons he’s been restricted to games in Leagues One and Two but has now been promoted to Select Group 2 which means he will be able to regularly referee games this season in the Championship.

Tonight’s will be his fourth Championship game this season and he’s been busy so far with sixteen yellow and two red cards in the three games to date. Eight home team players and eight away team players have received yellow cards from him while he’s sent off Preston’s Ched Evans in their 0-0 draw at Wigan on the opening Saturday of the season and last Saturday dismissed Coventry’s Gustavo Hamer as they went down 3-2 at Millwall.

He was very busy in that most recent game. Hamer had already received a yellow card as had his Coventry team mates Kyle McFadzean and Jake Bidwell. They were joined by four Millwall players – Dan McNamara, Jamie Shackleton, Benik Afobe and Tyler Burey.

It was his earlier Burnley games where his performances were poor. Those against Charlton in the 2012/13 season, when he wrongly sent off Kieran Trippier, followed by home games against West Ham, in the League Cup, and Derby in the following season. Apart from gifting Southampton a late equaliser in 2018 having got in the way, he his more recent performances were fine and he currently has a RATE THE REF rating of 62.55 out of a hundred.

The fourth official tonight is Ross Joyce who is yet to referee a Burnley game.
