gawthorpe 2Burnley’s first ever season as a category 2 club saw our youth team have a good season in the U18 Professional Development League while the under-23s recovered towards the end of the season to climb off the bottom of the their league.

In both leagues, the top two in each of the north and south groups compete in and end of season play-off to determine the overall winners and this season the under-23 title has gone with the north with the under-18 winners from the south.

It was an all north final at under-23 level. North winners Bolton beat south runners up Charlton 3-1 while Nottingham Forest won 1-0 at Crystal Palace. That set up a final between Forest and Bolton which Bolton won 2-1 at the City Ground.

Bolton faced Palace in the under-18 semi-final, losing the game 3-1 while Leeds were beaten 1-0 by Charlton. It was Charlton who went on to win the final with a 2-1 victory against Palace.

Bolton and Charlton join the two Sheffield clubs who were the winners in 2016/17, the league’s inaugural season, Wednesday winning the under-23 competition and United the under-18s.

We’ll take a look at Burnley’s first season at this level next week.
